A Pod Anouncement and Week Eight Picks

I have something to announce this week. You may have noticed a new episode of the podcast was missing from your feeds, and while picks were made for Thursday no post went up on the blog.

Dan and I are both are in different places to a year ago, yet alone from when we started The Wrong Football and at this point, both of us are struggling to find the time to produce a podcast and so have taken the reluctant decision to place it once again on hiatus. Than you to all those who said nice things over the years. Things may change in the future, or a podcast producer may fall out of the sky to record our weekly chats, but for now we’ll be sticking to the competitions here on the blog.

Here are our points for week seven and Dan is reeling me back in. For the record we both were right in picking the Ravens on Thursday:

Survivor Competition

With Dan choosing the Bucs to beat the Panthers I was able to parle my safe pick of the Cowboys against the Lions into picking up a point that sees me return to a deficit of one. Dan is going for the Jets to beat the Patriots at home this week whilst I am backing the Eagles to beat the Steelers and hoping that I haven’t jinxed them.

2022 Week Seven Picks

So I failed to take into account Prime Time Andy Dalton quarterbacking the Saints or the return of DeAndrew Hopkins for the Cardinals as I got the pick wrong. It didn’t feel like a disaster of a pick, and it was the multiple picks from Dalton trying to make up the deficit at the end of the first half that finish the Saints.

Anyway, moving on to the rest of the week seven picks.

Early Games:

I think the Falcons visit to the Bengals might well be the pick of the early slate, although the Giants at Jaguars could be fun and the AFC North showdown between the Ravens and Browns has the potential to catch the imagination.

Late Games:

The games that leap out as being competitive in the late slate are the Chiefs visiting the 49ers, but that is based on the 49ers finding a way despite the injuries, and the Seahawks at the Chargers where I think I do see an upset coming.

The prime-time Sunday game is likely to feature two starting quarterbacks coming back from concussions and whilst I do expect the Dolphins to run out winners in this one, the line is too rich for me to expect them to cover.

Monday Night Football

Bears @ Patriots (-7.5)

This should be a win a for a Patriots team who seem to have found something in recent weeks against a Bears team who haven’t. The line worries me a lot, particularly with Mac Jones possibly returning for the Patriots given that changes things rather than necessarily picking a side in the possible Patriots quarterback controversy. Still, the Bears haven’t convinced so even with more rest I’m trust the marginal numbers.

Dan’s self-proclaimed set of bold picks saw him pickup a point on me a third of the way through the seasons and there’s still plenty of time to catch up.

Saints @ Cardinals (-1.5)

I’m intrigued to see how this one plays out with the Saints coming off the loss to the Bengals and the Cardinals seeming disarray and churn at receiver. My numbers suggest the Cardinals is the better pick, but I don’t trust them at all and given I like the Saints to win anyway and I’m getting admittedly a small number of points, I am still backing the Saints.

Survivor Competition

I’m not thinking I jinxed the Buccaneers last week as I simply didn’t know Brady was acting like a diva rather than the ultimate quarterback so with him missing practices/walkthroughs whilst attending a wedding it’s possible not surprising things went badly. Dan pulled a further point ahead picking against his own team,, which I know was painful for him. This week I am jinxing the Cowboys who should beat the Lions even if they don’t cover the line.

2022 Week Six Picks

We’re now far enough into the season that the byes have started, while Dan and I got off to a bad start picking games in week six given that neither of us accounted for Carson Wentz’s 6-0 record on a Thursday Night.

There’s a couple of cracking matchups, including a repeat of the Buffalo Bills taking on the Kansas City Chiefs so we’ll have to see how things look across the rest of the week.

Early Games:

It’s a bit of a mixed slate of early games given that the tight games seem to Bengals visiting the Saints, an AFC South game where who can truly say what the Jaguars will do against the Colts, and the Browns hosting the Patriots. Still, I’m interested to see how the Packers do this week coming off the disappointing London loss to the Giants and our spreadsheet of who we have watched is pointing me to the 49ers @ Falcons that I am looking forward to finding out how they are playing.

The game of the week, and potentially the regular season, dominates this group of late games as with all due respect to the Panthers, Rams, Cardinals and Seahawks – nearly all eyes will be on the Bills and Chiefs matchup.

This is a game likely to come down to the Cowboys defence going up against Eagles offensive line and with perennial Pro Bowl center Jason Kelce having had to come out of the game last week with an ankle injury, it will be interesting to see how they cope against the positively terrifying Micah Parsons. I can see the Eagles winning this one given they are unbeaten, but this line is a bit rich for me under the circumstances.

Monday Night Football

Broncos @ Chargers (-5.5)

I positively hate this line because as dysfunctional as the Bronocs offence has been, their defence has been really good and they’ve only been truly out of one game this season in terms of final score. Meanwhile I don’t trust the Chargers at all, with what seems to be a head coach who hasn’t clearly defined how aggressive he wants to be with analytic decisions, injuries and an offence that seems to hinder as much as help Justin Herbert. I say this not because I’m expecting the Chargers to lose, but this number of points feels rich to me, but it’s not hard to see how the Chargers could run up big winners in this one.

Still, I’m sticking to my mantra of trust the numbers, and whilst this is right in the, ‘we don’t know what to do with the game’ range, they lean Broncos for me so that’s where I’m going… Needless to say I don’t feel comfortable about it.

Competition Thursday: 2022 Week Six

I am absolutely not taking things for granted, but we’re well over a quarter of the way through the season, we’re starting to get team byes and I’ve got a double digit lead in the picks competition. There’s still a long way to go but I can’t think of a much better way to start, even if can’t salve the Bengals’ stumbling start to the competition that matters.

On to week six!

I am looking forward to watching these teams again and seeing the changes in both of them. However, picking it is a different matter entirely, particularly when the line truly is giving us nothing to work with. I’m not sure what Dan’s rationale is, but mine is that the Bears are at home on a short week and haven’t had their head coach throwing their quarterback under the bus, but that isn’t exactly convincing.

I guess in a week where the Chiefs are playing the Bills I shouldn’t complain about this matchup too much.

Survivor Competition

Dan made the mistake of trusting the AFC South last week and so got his second elimination of the season with the Texans beating the Jaguars. Meanwhile two weeks of comparatively safe picks has seen me at least drag myself back into contention and whist it might come back to bite me later in the season, I’m going to continue that trend with the Buccaneers taking on the struggling steelers, while Dan has opted for the Vikings visiting his Dolphins.

The Thursday night game was very much one for the die-hard football fan given the quality of both offences on display. Let’s hope the rest of the week five slate of games picks up in quality.

Early Games:

The second London game of the season sees the Packers finally play in the UK as they host the Giants at the Totenham stadium. The Giants have a number of questions at quarterback given the injuries they had last week and so you would expect the Packers to win but given how competitive both these teams have been this season he line seems a little high to me.

Late Games:

It’s a curious group of late games as for all their problems, the 49ers just look like a different stratosphere of team than the Panthers. I have to wonder how the Rams struggling offensive line will do against Micah Parsons and the Cowboys’ pass rush, whilst the Cardinals have singularly unimpressed and welcome an Eagles team with the sole unbeaten record going into week five.

This looks to be one of the matchups of the weekend, although I’m still not convinced by the Bengals’ offence, The Bengals’ defence however, has been playing great and it should be an interesting matchup against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offence who have also been playing so well this season. The extra half point has me taking the Bengals, although I could actually see the game going either way despite the Bengals sweeping the Ravens last season, but it is worth noting this is the largest disparity in injury score at sicscore.com that I have seen this season.

Raiders @ Chiefs (-7.5)

The Chiefs really should win this one having only had one blip all season while the Raiders have a solitary win, which is perhaps not surprising given how badly the previous regime did with its early picks in the draft. That said, this line is the wrong side of seven and with numbers telling me that this division game has a slight advantage to the Raiders I’ll see if they can keep this one close.

Competition Thursday: 2022 Week Five

It’s been an odd week with the fall out of the Tua situation into a week without podcast and somehow it’s already another Competition Thursday. I have my first losing week and Dan pulled another game back thanks to a late entry on the London game that I let him have.

I am really curious to see how this game goes given that neither team has started well this season. There’s been questions about the supposed strength of the Colts that has highlighted the age of Matt Ryan whilst the Broncos are still finding their way with Russell Wilson who has to be looking on with frustration at the success Geno Smith is having with the Seahawks.

This may not be a matchup that sets the pulse raising for many, but I am really curious about both teams, but I’m looking at that extra half point and the injury to running back Javonte Williams and nervously going with my numbers

I finally got a point last week with the Packers getting the win against the Patriots, but I’m some way behind Dan and so with him backing the Jaguars against the Texans this week I’m backing the favourite in the largest line of the year. It’s been a weird few days for one reason or another. I’ve found the Tua situation hanging over my response to the Bengals win as with the failures that enabled him to be on the field Thursday night and the potential second concussion really made me feel complicit. This sits in contrast to my reaction to an excellent podcast interview with Willie Anderson and Andrew Whitworth ahead of the same Bengals’ game as they are the good and bad side of this sport I love.

I’m away this weekend so I’m going to drop my picks now, will fill Dan’s in at a later point, and will see if I can find time to unpick my feelings in more detail with a specific post.
